Comparing Light

“For
jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly,
unspiritual, and demonic. For
wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder
and evil of every kind.” James 3:15-16
Ever fall into the jealousy and
comparison trap? Yeah, me too; however, this verse sort of freaks me out. I certainly do not want to do anything
“demonic” or find myself in disorder and evil of any kind. But, we can find ourselves there and spiral down into a pit of hate if we allow it to continue.
Basically when we do this, we are saying to God that the gifts you have given
to me are just not good enough.
To quote my teacher and founder of Holy
Yoga, Brooke Boon: “To compare myself with others is to intentionally look
Christ in the face and say ‘you are not enough’ what you have for me and that
your Word promises, is not enough. It’s to say that the temporal fix from
believing that I am ‘better than her’ or ‘it’s all her fault’ is more secure
than the act of Christ on the cross.” WOW…that will make you rethink your
behavior.
When I start to compare myself to
others, I know that it is time for me to dig deeper into God’s word. I know
that it is time to start writing out my thanks.
In her book, One Thousand Gifts,
Ann Voskamp dares us to keep a gratitude journal. By writing down my thanks it takes my eyes
off of what I think I want and puts them back where they belong. If I can keep
my eyes on Jesus and lean into Him, then I can keep myself out of the comparison
pit.
Today, when we feel like we've taken our eyes off of our assignment and on to someone else's...let's remember that He has given us our work to do for a reason. Each of us has been given our own assignment from Him and the only Light we
should ever compare ourselves to is Jesus.
He is the only one we should strive to be like. Chase Him today!
“Make a careful exploration of who you
are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t
be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you
must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own
life.” Galatians 6:4-5
